Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report talks to Rob McDonald (Professor & author) about one of the more complicated of the founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and his complicated relationship with the history of slavery. In this clip Rob focuses on Jefferson’s life after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. What few people know is that while also being a slave owner the first law he proposed as the Governor of Virginia was to make it legal for people to free their slaves. He also proposed a law that would have forbid slavery in what would be the future states of the deep south. He also discusses what we know about his relationship with Sally Hemings and why his debt prevented him from even being able to free his slaves. As with most of American history the real details of American slavery are more complex than we are often led to believe.
This clip is from our President’s Week special in 2018 where we partnered with Learn Liberty for five episodes about five Presidents.
